One of the things I love most about leading a class is how it invites me to live inside a question.
As soon as I begin to dream up a course, something shifts — I start noticing the world differently. I start tuning into wonder. The question I’m living inside right now is this:
How do we create the world we want to inhabit?
And how do we do that in a way that isn’t far off or aspirational, but deeply simple and very close by?
Lately, it feels like magic is hiding in plain sight.
As Mati and I have been noodling on prompts for Make Your Own Magic and sharing the spirit of the course with friends, I’ve found myself spotting magic everywhere — and wondering, What exactly constitutes magic?
Is it delight?
Is it synchronicity?
Is it kindness?
I think the answer is yes. It’s all of those things.
The other day, I was astonished by the ocean of ripe, fat cherries at my local produce market. I don’t know what it was — maybe the timing, maybe the light — but they were possibly the best cherries I’ve ever had in my life. So good, in fact, that I couldn’t just keep them for myself.
I filled a small blue bowl and drove to Oakland to bring them to my friend Rob.
When he opened the door, I said simply, “Sometimes life is…” and handed him the bowl of cherries.
He blinked, then burst out, “Wait, did you know about my cherry obsession?”
I didn’t.
He laughed and said, “I’m totally obsessed. I eat them every day during cherry season!”
And just like that — through a simple, intuitive act — we ended up having the sweetest evening. Rob, his husband, their beautiful dog, and me, basking in the glow of shared fruit and shared presence.
That’s the kind of magic I’m talking about.
Not the dramatic kind with glitter or fireworks — but the subtle, tender magic of paying attention. Of showing up with a little offering. Of remembering we belong to each other.
In a world where we often feel helpless or overwhelmed, I find myself reaching for these kinds of moments. Tiny portals of beauty and connection. Gestures that remind us that we still have agency — not to change everything, but to create small sanctuaries of sweetness.
So I invite you to join me — in noticing, in sharing, in making your own magic.
We begin August 1st. And we’d love to have you with us!
on this quest. love your writing xx
